Are Shaker Cabinets On-Trend For Your Kitchen Remodel?

A shaker cabinet can complete a kitchen design to perfection, as seen in one of our latest Grayslake kitchen and lower-level home remodels.

If you’ve considered redesigning your kitchen or have purchased cabinets for your kitchen or bathroom, I’m sure you have come across the term ‘shaker cabinets’.  In a before and after kitchen remodel blog, we featured an Evanston kitchen remodel. This is an excellent example of a traditional-style shaker cabinet.

But what exactly does the term shaker cabinet mean, and where did it come from?  Finally, should shaker cabinets be your go-to door style for your upcoming kitchen remodeling?

What is a shaker cabinet?

Shaker furniture is a style that was developed back in the 18th century by the religious sect named The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers. Their principles of simplicity, honesty, and utility were translated into their furniture-making, creating a style with very little ornamentation and a clean minimalist design. The term shaker when it is applied to cabinetry means a cabinet door that features a flat, recessed center panel with a square outer frame. This understated design has weathered the test of time and is still very popular today.

Wow! I really do learn something new every day in the construction and interior home remodeling industry. If this isn’t a conversation starter, I really don’t know what is Lotus Ladies!!

As we dive in, let’s take a look at some of my favorite shaker cabinet designs from past kitchen designs we have installed and renovated here at Lotus Home Improvement. What I love about some of these cabinets featured is the modified shaker look.

Today, shaker cabinets don’t necessarily need to form the frame with a 90-degree blunt angle. A modified shaker cabinet has a softer edge coming into the recessed panel.

Are Shaker cabinets still on-trend in 2022?

According to Houzz's research, more than 60% of homeowners undergoing a kitchen remodel still select shaker-style cabinets. With the popularity of shaker cabinets being so high, a number of variations have come out on the market to give homeowners even more of a choice when it comes to getting that simple modern style.

As a kitchen cabinet dealer, we provide door styles for every style preference — undoubtedly, however, the shaker cabinet is by far the most popular go-to style for our clients when selecting both kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I would say higher than the 60% number, and more like 85%.

Many of the homeowners we work with feel it is a timeless option that won’t trend out of style.

An Evanston kitchen remodel chose our custom Woodland cabinetry line using a modified shaker door style cabinet. They also used a custom Benjamin Moore paint color for their island.

Slimline Door Style

One of the newest variations to come out in 2021 and is still going strong in 2022 is the “skinny” or “thin” shaker, where the outer border of the door has been slimmed down to create a very thin or “skinny” profile. This has created a look that marries the more standard shaker style and the very modern slab door to create a more contemporary version of the classic shaker style.

A great example of this can be found in our Woodland cabinet line, in their Slimline door style.

This door style is offered in any of their standard painted finishes or can be finished using any Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore color for a truly custom look.

Woodland Cabinetry is custom built with hand-applied finishes for the finest handcrafted look.

Another example of modified shaker styles can be found in our Legend cabinet line. Legend offers four variations of Shaker styles, ranging from a more traditional detail shown here in the Niagra door style to the more classic Shaker profile of the Ranier door.

Legend can provide a well-made cabinet at an affordable price, with that little extra detail that will make your kitchen distinctive while still keeping your budget on track. Because of this and their amazing color offerings, Legend Cabinetry is the most popular choice for our clients!
