Why Contrast is Key to Creating a Luxury Bathroom Design

When planning a bathroom remodel, many homeowners gravitate toward light, neutral palettes. While white-on-white designs may seem like the safest option, too much of the same color can actually make a space feel flat and uninspired.

This was exactly the case for one Northbrook bathroom we recently transformed. The homeowners initially leaned toward a lighter vanity to pair with their white quartz and porcelain tile. They wanted a clean, bright look — but hadn’t considered how a lack of contrast could wash the room out.

The Power of Contrast

Contrast adds depth, visual interest, and a sense of luxury to any space. In bathrooms, this often means pairing light surfaces (like walls, floors, or countertops) with darker elements (such as cabinetry or hardware) to create balance.

Here’s why contrast matters:

  • Defines the Space – Darker features help anchor the design.

  • Highlights Key Features – A dark vanity draws the eye and makes the lighter quartz countertop pop.

  • Avoids a Sterile Look – All-white bathrooms can feel cold and clinical without variation in tones.

From Reluctance to “Wow”

For this Northbrook remodel, we proposed a bold black double vanity to pair with white quartz countertops, large format tile porcelain shower walls in soft white hue, and matching floor tile. At first, the homeowners were hesitant. Would it feel too dark? Would it clash with their vision?

To ease their concerns, we presented detailed renderings and a mood board showing how the black vanity would ground the space and tie together the matte black fixtures and hardware. Seeing the design come to life visually helped them confidently choose this option.

The result? A stunning, high-contrast bathroom that feels both luxurious and cohesive. The black vanity became the statement piece they didn’t know they needed.

Luxury, Functionality, and Safety — All in One

Beyond its aesthetics, this remodel incorporates subtle accessibility features:

  • Integrated grab bars that blend with the matte black fixtures

  • A floating teak bench in the shower for comfort and practicality

  • A curbless entry for ease of use

These elements ensure the bathroom is safe and functional — without looking like an institutional “accessible” space.

The Final Look

By layering contrasting finishes and textures — soft white porcelain tiles, dark cabinetry, warm teak, and elegant black accents — this remodel delivers both style and function. The homeowners now enjoy a spa-like retreat that’s tailored to their needs today and in the future.
