A Thoughtful Kitchen Transformation in Lake Forest, Illinois
Share
This Lake Forest kitchen remodel is a great example of how intentional design can completely change the way a space feels without changing the footprint. The homeowners loved their home, but the kitchen felt incredibly dated and no longer functioned the way a kitchen should. When their range broke, it became the moment that pushed them to finally move forward with a full kitchen update.
Our goal was simple. Make the space feel like a kitchen again, not an afterthought, while keeping the layout that already worked for the home.
Before: A Dated Kitchen That No Longer Worked

Before the remodel, the kitchen felt closed in and tired. The cabinetry was outdated, storage was limited, and features like the soffit made the space feel shorter and darker than it actually was. There was also a small desk area that no longer served a real purpose for the homeowners.
While the hardwood flooring was still in good condition and remained untouched, everything above it felt overdue for an update.
Design and Planning: Keeping the Footprint Intentional

One of the key decisions on this project was to keep the existing footprint of the kitchen. Instead of forcing a full layout change, we focused on improving flow, storage, and visual height.
Design highlights included:
- Removing the soffit to visually open the space
- Installing 42 inch wall cabinets
- Adding double stacked crown molding to bring cabinetry to the ceiling
- Using stock cabinetry strategically to achieve a custom look
- Incorporating glass-front cabinets for visual interest
- Reworking the peninsula to include double-sided storage
The peninsula became a true workhorse, offering significantly more storage while still maintaining an open and inviting feel.
Construction and Project Management

This remodel required careful sequencing since the homeowners remained in the home and the flooring stayed in place. Cabinet installation, appliance coordination, and countertop templating all needed to be planned precisely.
One unique challenge was the sink selection. The homeowners chose an old-school style sink that fit the aesthetic perfectly, but it unfortunately broke multiple times before final installation. Managing that issue while keeping the project moving was part of ensuring the final result matched the original vision without compromise.
A Classic White Kitchen, Done with Intention

While this kitchen features classic white cabinetry, thoughtful proportions and layered details are what keep it from feeling flat or builder-basic. Tall cabinetry, glass accents, and clean lines all contribute to a timeless look that still feels warm and functional.

The Final Result

The finished kitchen feels brighter, taller, and far more functional. By keeping the footprint intact and focusing on thoughtful design decisions, the homeowners gained a space that finally feels like the heart of their home.
This project is a great example of how experienced planning, skilled craftsmanship, and clear project management can completely transform a kitchen without unnecessary changes.
